An invitation to join:

Book Arts Santa Cruz is organization for everyone interested in the book arts.

In the early 1980s a group of Santa Cruz letterpress printers actively involved in making fine press books formed the Printers' Chappel of Santa Cruz. Today, because the world of the book has changed, and there are so many people interested in the book arts who are not letterpress printers, members of the SCPC have decided to create a new organization, Book Arts Santa Cruz. We welcome and want to include printers, printmakers, graphic designers, marblers, calligraphers, scrap bookers, binders, papermakers, book collectors, artists… in other words, everyone interested in the book arts, novices and professionals alike.

If you want to be part of BASC, send an email to Matt at bookartssantacruz@gmail.com, or call Peter at 475-1455

A successful meeting

The second meeting of Book Arts Santa Cruz and the Printers Chappel of Santa Cruz was held Wednesday, October 19th, 2011. It was hosted by Larry Van Velzer and Peggy Gotthold at their Foolscap Press. They gave tours of the press and bindery, and show much of their recent work. John and Susie Bower were on hand to show binding prototypes they has made in collaboration with Larry and Peggy, produced using their CMC and laser cutting equipment. We held a general meeting, well generally chaotic, as usual, and two interesting propoals were made. Felicia Rice proposed that BASC host a summer book arts camp at one of the local summer campgrounds, using members studios for the workshop locations. Matt Cohen proposed an art sale to benefit the Museum of Art and History, to run in conjunction with a conference and show about the history of printing in Santa Cruz County.

Kim Hamilton printed a wonderful little keepsake for the event, which I have scanned and posted here.
