An invitation to join:

Book Arts Santa Cruz is organization for everyone interested in the book arts.

In the early 1980s a group of Santa Cruz letterpress printers actively involved in making fine press books formed the Printers' Chappel of Santa Cruz. Today, because the world of the book has changed, and there are so many people interested in the book arts who are not letterpress printers, members of the SCPC have decided to create a new organization, Book Arts Santa Cruz. We welcome and want to include printers, printmakers, graphic designers, marblers, calligraphers, scrap bookers, binders, papermakers, book collectors, artists… in other words, everyone interested in the book arts, novices and professionals alike.

Book Arts Santa Cruz: The first official meeting is coming up soon

The first official meeting of Book Arts Santa Cruz and the Printers Chappel of Santa Cruz will be held Tuesday, August 23rd, from 5-8 PM. The meeting will be hosted by Adrienne Momi and Momi Lani Paper Arts. The address is 980 17th Ave in Live Oak, across from Del Mar Middle School and the Simpkins Swim Center. Momi Lani Paper Arts is located near the rear of the building in the artists' studios. Any and all Santa Cruzians interested in the book arts are invited to come socialize and see the Momi Lani papermaking "factory" and samples of what gets made there. Everyone, please bring food and drinks--it makes for more congeniality. And invite anyone you think might be interested. Everyone is welcome.

Please RSVP so we can get a rough count, which would help with getting enough seating.

For more information call Peter Thomas at 475 1455.

Here is a note Linden McNeilly sent after the meeting we has last month to get this thing off the ground....

"I was thrilled to have attended a meeting of Santa Cruz’s book arts enthusiasts at the home of Peter and Donna Thomas on July 22, 2011. Old friends and new had gathered to meet and make plans to establish a formal Book Arts group to serve Santa Cruz County. Many of those who attended have known each other from previous groups such as the Printers' Chappel of Santa Cruz and Bay Area Book Arts. There were printers, papermakers, binders, illustrators, writers, and teachers of the book arts in attendance.

The hope expressed at this meeting was that forming a new group, provisionally called Book Arts Santa Cruz, would help spread knowledge of the joy of book arts throughout the county. This group would be a collective of artisans, teachers and lifetime learners in the book arts who would get together to share, learn from each other, offer classes and put on shows to inform the greater community about the fun and legacy of making beautiful books. It was proposed that the group would meeting once a month, at various members’ homes or studios, to share projects, insights and plan for the future. As a beginning book artist I felt welcome immediately and I am looking forward to learning more from this very hard working, experienced and talented group of artisans."
