An invitation to join:

Book Arts Santa Cruz is organization for everyone interested in the book arts.

In the early 1980s a group of Santa Cruz letterpress printers actively involved in making fine press books formed the Printers' Chappel of Santa Cruz. Today, because the world of the book has changed, and there are so many people interested in the book arts who are not letterpress printers, members of the SCPC have decided to create a new organization, Book Arts Santa Cruz. We welcome and want to include printers, printmakers, graphic designers, marblers, calligraphers, scrap bookers, binders, papermakers, book collectors, artists… in other words, everyone interested in the book arts, novices and professionals alike.

If you want to be part of BASC, send an email to Matt at bookartssantacruz@gmail.com, or call Peter at 475-1455

Book Arts Pop Up Museum September 6, 2013. 5:30-7:30 pm

BASC members will be showing their work at the upcoming MAH Pop Up Museum as part of September's First Friday event. The Pop Up Museum will take place on Sept 6th on the corner of Pacific and Cooper Street, right outside O'Neill's surf shop. It will go from 5:30-7:30 pm. The MAH pop up museums are open to the public, and visitors are allowed to touch exhibited content. See you there.

Post Event Info:

Here is a review of the event written by Pop Up Museum Intern, Lauren Benetua

What was it about?

Our First Friday Pop Up Museum on Book Arts, held in collaboration with Book Arts Santa Cruz (BASC) highlighted that books aren’t just for reading.  BASC is an organization for anyone interested in books arts, from calligraphy to paper-making, scrap books to marbling, printmaking to book collections. We invited visitors to share their love for the artistry of books by bringing a book, book arts, book parts, or simply viewing the work by BASC.

How did it go?

This month's First Friday Pop Up Museum on Book Arts brought along a new appreciation for the things we know as 'books'. Some people misread books as stuffy, educational apparati that, once consumed, crank out indoctrinated masses. But it's not true!  As we featured beautiful, hand-made book arts, we were able to communicate to the public that books don't always have to be regarded as text.  As Peter from Book Arts Santa Cruz put it, "the book is the trojan horse of art."  This statement rang true, not only from our conversation about how crafting a book can (and should) be thought of 'outside the box', but also because of the reactions we saw from our visitors.  The amount of surprise we saw and heard that a book could look, feel, or be so awesome was very telling of our normal attitudes towards books.  Normally, a visitor can contemplate a work of art for several seconds before moving on.  With a book, once opened, a reader or viewer can revel in all it's beauty both literally and figuratively.
We featured books that were hand bound using various native techniques throughout South East Asia, accordion-style miniatures, altered books using collage, printmaking and more.  Just by taking a peak at our table, we brought to awareness that books are also artifacts of our society.  One work was created out of a ukelele which functioned as a book and an instrument simultaneously. The idea of a book as a square object full of text was constantly challenged.
This First Friday Pop Up also received a lot of foot traffic for obvious reasons.  Getting flashed mobbed three times surely affects the turn-out...Although this was a nice touch, it did not discourage visitors from coming up to say "hi" and ask us questions on how books were bound, or just to tell us how downright cool they are.  Said of one of the works, "This right here is my favorite book.  It happened.  Right now at this Pop-Up."

March 22, 2012 meeting to be hosted by Felicia Rice

For those of you who missed the meeting, Felicia had her presses running and we all got a chance to print a broadside, in two colors because she had two presses running. A big round of thanks to Felicia for giving her talk about book arts in Mexico, and for hosting the meeting.

Please make your way to my place in Bonny Doon for the next Book Arts Santa Cruz meeting. I'll be sharing my experience at Codex Mexico http://www.codexfoundation.org/mexico-en.html. This truly fantastic exhibition, symposium and book fair of California and Mexican book artists took place in Mexico City from February 16-19, just last week (and the reason I missed Gary's meeting). There will be slides and anecdotes, a keepsake (each one print one).

The meeting will take place on March 22nd from 6:00-9:00. My home and studio are at 10699 Empire Grade, 10 miles past the west entrance to UCSC. The drive takes 1/2 hour or so. Do carpool if you can. Bring goodies to share.

RSVP by March 20. Feel free to invite a friend who is not yet part of BASC.

A successful meeting

The second meeting of Book Arts Santa Cruz and the Printers Chappel of Santa Cruz was held Wednesday, October 19th, 2011. It was hosted by Larry Van Velzer and Peggy Gotthold at their Foolscap Press. They gave tours of the press and bindery, and show much of their recent work. John and Susie Bower were on hand to show binding prototypes they has made in collaboration with Larry and Peggy, produced using their CMC and laser cutting equipment. We held a general meeting, well generally chaotic, as usual, and two interesting propoals were made. Felicia Rice proposed that BASC host a summer book arts camp at one of the local summer campgrounds, using members studios for the workshop locations. Matt Cohen proposed an art sale to benefit the Museum of Art and History, to run in conjunction with a conference and show about the history of printing in Santa Cruz County.

Kim Hamilton printed a wonderful little keepsake for the event, which I have scanned and posted here.

Book Arts Santa Cruz: The first meeting!!!

Our first official meeting for Book Arts Santa Cruz on August 23rd was a great success! Special thanks to Adrienne Momi and the artists of Momi Lani Paper Arts for hosting the event and to all those that contributed wonderful food and beverages to the pot luck. Also, a special thanks to Peter Thomas for his efforts in coordinating the event. For those that were unable to attend, no problem. We hope to see you at the next event. We will let everyone know as soon as our next meeting time and location has been determined.

A side note for you printers out there: I was recently given a large galley rack with galleys that I have no use for. Is there anyone in the group that would like to have it free of charge? The galleys themselves will take some work with steel wool and solvents to remove rust build-up, but other than that, it is a nice rack. If anyone is interested, please let me know and I can send you pictures. It is available for free pick-up or delivery (in the back of my truck). Please let me know.

Also, for those of you that own a Board Shear... Paul Brubaker of Bindery Tools is planning a West Coast trip to service Board Shears and other bindery equipment. If anyone has the need to have their Board Shear serviced, please let me know. I know of a place in SF that sharpen board shear blades up to 8 feet in length. When Paul arrives he can properly install them. The more people in our area that he is able to service, the less expensive it will be for all of us. I am hoping to have him come out, but I am in need of others to help make it more economical.

Thanks everyone!

All my best,

Matt Cohen

We welcome anyone and everyone interested in the book arts to join us. If you want to sign up to be part of Book Arts Santa Cruz (or just to get news of our happenings) send an email to Matthew Cohen at bookartssantacruz@gmail.com or call Peter Thomas at 475 1455

We plan to create a yahoo group and would like someone to volunteer to moderate it. Please call Peter Thomas at 475-1455 if you are interested in helping this way.

Book Arts Santa Cruz: The first official meeting is coming up soon

The first official meeting of Book Arts Santa Cruz and the Printers Chappel of Santa Cruz will be held Tuesday, August 23rd, from 5-8 PM. The meeting will be hosted by Adrienne Momi and Momi Lani Paper Arts. The address is 980 17th Ave in Live Oak, across from Del Mar Middle School and the Simpkins Swim Center. Momi Lani Paper Arts is located near the rear of the building in the artists' studios. Any and all Santa Cruzians interested in the book arts are invited to come socialize and see the Momi Lani papermaking "factory" and samples of what gets made there. Everyone, please bring food and drinks--it makes for more congeniality. And invite anyone you think might be interested. Everyone is welcome.

Please RSVP so we can get a rough count, which would help with getting enough seating.

For more information call Peter Thomas at 475 1455.

Here is a note Linden McNeilly sent after the meeting we has last month to get this thing off the ground....

"I was thrilled to have attended a meeting of Santa Cruz’s book arts enthusiasts at the home of Peter and Donna Thomas on July 22, 2011. Old friends and new had gathered to meet and make plans to establish a formal Book Arts group to serve Santa Cruz County. Many of those who attended have known each other from previous groups such as the Printers' Chappel of Santa Cruz and Bay Area Book Arts. There were printers, papermakers, binders, illustrators, writers, and teachers of the book arts in attendance.

The hope expressed at this meeting was that forming a new group, provisionally called Book Arts Santa Cruz, would help spread knowledge of the joy of book arts throughout the county. This group would be a collective of artisans, teachers and lifetime learners in the book arts who would get together to share, learn from each other, offer classes and put on shows to inform the greater community about the fun and legacy of making beautiful books. It was proposed that the group would meeting once a month, at various members’ homes or studios, to share projects, insights and plan for the future. As a beginning book artist I felt welcome immediately and I am looking forward to learning more from this very hard working, experienced and talented group of artisans."
